Register for the Brass Tacks Workshop The Historian’s Craft: Understanding the Past through Primary and Secondary Sources

Want to “craft” better history? Learn how to use the raw materials and tools of the historian to discover your community’s past.

With the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit Between Fences as an example, the Historian’s Craft workshop will give you the tools you need to make sense of the raw material of history: primary and secondary sources. You’ll learn how historians use these sources to understand, write, publish, and exhibit past events. The workshop will be led by two historians well-known in Ohio: J.D. Britton, the former director of Ohio Historical Society’s Local History Office, and Tim Messer-Kruse, chair of the Ethnic Studies Program at Bowling Green State University and a founder of the web site Toledo’s Attic (http://www.toledosattic.org/).

The workshop will conclude with a presentation by Jack Shortlidge of the Ohio Humanities Council. He will describe grants available from the council, eligibility requirements, and how to apply.

The workshop’s cost is $25 and includes continental breakfast, lunch, and all workshop materials.
